Design code to shape future development across Lichfield and Burntwood

A design code created by BDP for future development has been hailed as a “trailblazer” after being approved by Lichfield District Council.
The document sets rules for future construction projects to adhere to based on different areas such as city centre and villages.
It was developed by urban designers and town planners from BDP following work with residents, businesses and other local organizations.
The design code has now been formally adopted and published.

“The design code highlights the various area types – city centre, cathedral precinct, suburban, village, urban and employment – that exist in our district and guides how proposed building development will look depending on the area type it is located in.
“We are one of only a few district councils in the country to develop a design code and all new development is expected to follow the rules it sets out.
“It will help us ensure that proposals are designed and built to the highest quality expected by Lichfield District Council.”

“Good design has the power to shape cities in ways that enhance lives, build stronger communities, and create beautiful spaces that endure. That’s why I’m so happy that the Lichfield District Council design code has been officially adopted as part of the development plan.
“This is a practical, clear document that strikes the right balance between planning needs and urban design principles and provides much-needed certainty for developers, planners, and residents across the district.
“We know that this document also sets an example for district-wide design codes, showing that they can be successfully applied at a larger scale, offering a model for other regions across the UK to follow.
